A new A1 motorway exit is now open at Castelnuovo di Porto, between the toll barrier Roma Nord and the Settebagni exit. It is proving particularly useful for travellers heading to or from the towns along the Flaminia, like Castelnuovo itself, Riano and Morlupo, as well as those between the Flaminia and the Cassia like Sacrofano and Formello, avoiding the long trek via Capena for drivers used to exiting at Fiano Romano.
At present it connects only west to the Tiberina, with a huge new roundabout at the foot of the hill up to the Flaminia at Castelnuovo. But it will shortly be also connected east to the Salaria; the huge new bridge over the Tiber at the end of the light industry park in Monterotondo Scalo is already completed, although not yet open to traffic. Work is well advanced on the infrastructure to bring traffic from this bridge to the Salaria both north and south of Monterotondo, thus easing congestion along the single-lane Salaria through Monterotondo Scalo.
The whole stretch of motorway from Settebagni to Roma Nord toll barrier is a hive of activity, with some 16 km. of third lane (not counting the emergency lane) being added in both directions. Some night shifts are being worked, and parts of the third lane are already in operation. The improved stretch includes 6 new bridges and over 3 km of acoustic barriers to protect nearby residents from the noise of traffic.
