Dario Fo dies in Milan

Italian Nobel laureate playwright dies aged 90.

Dario Fo, the internationally celebrated Nobel prize-winning playwright, actor and director, died in Milan, aged 90, on the morning of 13 October.

Best known for his biting political satire in plays such as Accidental Death of an Anarchist and Can't Pay? Won't Pay!, Fo won the Nobel prize for literature in 1997.

Hailing Fo as "one of the world’s great Italians", premier Matteo Renzi said: “Italy has lost one of the great protagonists of the theatre, of culture, of the civic life of our country.”

In addition to his contribution to the arts, Fo was a prominent left-wing activist, recently lending his enthusiastic support to Italy's anti-establishment Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S).

In 1958 he co-founded the Dario Fo–Franca Rame Theatre Company in Milan, together with his late wife, the Italian theatre actress, playwright and political activist, who died in 2013. He is survived by his son, the writer-actor Jacopo Fo.
